Beyond the Photograph: The Journey from Seeing to Significance
Dennis Hammon M. Photog. CR.CPP, F-PPI, F-ASP
What makes a photograph more than simply a well-made image? In this full-day program, Dennis Hammon uses the landscape as his classroom to explore the journey from seeing to recognizing, understanding, and ultimately expressing. Through beautiful landscape imagery and real-world examples, Dennis will explore light, composition, perspective, timing, previsualization, intuition, and the decisions that transform a scene into a meaningful photograph. But the program goes beyond technique to examine the journey required to create work that is personal and lasting: slowing down, becoming present, understanding your subject, and recognizing the photograph that deserves to be made.
Although landscape photography provides the visual foundation, the principles apply to every photographer. A landscape photographer searches for emotion in a mountain valley; a portrait photographer finds it in a face; a wedding photographer discovers it in a fleeting gesture. The subject changes, but the process of seeing does not. Dennis will challenge photographers to look beyond trends, tricks, competition, and social media recognition to discover their own photographic ‘why’, and ultimately, asks a simple but powerful question: Are we simply making photographs, or are we creating something that has the power to remain with another person long after they have seen it?
**Attendees should bring to class: something to take notes with/on.**

Photographic Artist | Educator | Fellow of ASP
Dennis Hammon did not come to photography to collect titles.
He came to understand light.
What began as fascination slowly became devotion — long hours before sunrise, standing in silence, waiting not for spectacle but for something honest. Over time, the camera became less of a tool and more of a teacher. The land taught patience. Weather taught humility. Failure taught sincerity.
Dennis holds the degrees of Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman and is a Fellow of the American Society of Photographers (F-ASP). Yet those distinctions represent something deeper than achievement. They mark decades of disciplined growth, study, competition, critique, and service to the profession he loves.
His work explores the full emotional range of landscape photography — from grand and sublime vistas to quiet, intimate abstracts that ask the viewer to slow down. He believes a photograph should not overwhelm the viewer but invite them. Not perform — but resonate.
As a speaker and educator, Dennis shares not formulas, but awareness. He teaches visual literacy, artistic integrity, energy containment, and the courage to develop a personal voice. He challenges artists to move beyond imitation and into meaning — to create images that endure because they are sincere.
Those who study with Dennis quickly realize something:
He is not trying to impress you.
He is trying to help you see.
For Dennis Hammon, photography is a lifelong apprenticeship to light — and an offering of gratitude for the privilege of witnessing it
